Richard's Foreign Photos
Welcome
Welcome to my gallery of foreign Railways.

As far as Irish railways go, I am most interested in the railways of Bord na Mona, the Irish Peat Board. They have around 1200 route miles (though not all is used), and harvest peat for use in power stations, home fires and horticulture. Locomotives of a variety of ages and makes can be seen- the oldest I photographed in action was a 1948 Ruston, the newest a 21st century BnM built machine.

I also have an interest in German railways, where the old often rubs shoulders with new state of the art trains, and where public transport in general is excellent.

I hope you enjoy viewing these photographs as much as I enjoyed taking them.

26th Oct 2008North Island Main Trunk centenary celebrations, Feilding
On the Sunday of Labour Day weekend I took the Overlander from Wellington to Feilding to watch the locomotive cavalcade in celebration of 100 years of the North Island Main Trunk railway. As well as enjoying haulage by DC, EF and Wab classes I saw DXBs, DFBs, F, J, Ja, Ka, Silver Fern, RMs, EWs and more.

Only 14 months after the visit I actually get round to uploading pictures... I had a severe case of anti-froth. Dirty trains, cold beer, hot weather. I'd go back, but stick to travelling on Eurocities!

The various interlinked systems to the West of Offaly and East of Kildare feature some marked contrasts- most of the lines in the Allenwood area are disused (including the famous lifting bridge over the Grand Canal), while only a few miles away at Edenderry power station it is possible to view nearly non-stop action.
10th Apr 2006Mountdillon system (Bord na Móna)
The Mountdillon system spans Roscommon and Longford, and is primarily concerned with delivering peat to Lough Ree power station at Lanesborough. At this site one can see the unusual sight of two power stations within yards of each other, as the old Lanesborough power station has not yet been demolished (correct at April 2006). We were granted the priviledge of entering the works at Mountdillon (a few miles west of Lanesboro'), and saw many locomotives we would not otherwise have seen.
